Ocoee, Florida: The Town Where It Happened Twice
In 2017 the Florida Dept. of Health confirmed Legionnaires' cases tied to an LA Fitness in Ocoee. In late 2025 it confirmed 14 more cases with gym exposure at the same address, under a different operator. The best-documented gym sanitation story in America.
One town, one street address — 1560 E. Silver Star Rd — two operators, eight years apart. The 2025 gym operates in the same building where the 2017 cluster was investigated, after a multi-million-dollar operator renovation in between. If you read one Gym Watch file, read this one.
2017 — LA Fitness, Ocoee Documented
The Florida Department of Health in Orange County confirmed three Legionnaires’ disease cases and identified the LA Fitness in Ocoee (1560 E Silver Star Rd) as a common exposure. Precision matters here: the confirmed link was epidemiological — the Ocoee club’s own water samples tested negative; two other Orlando-area clubs (Metro West and Hunter’s Creek) were the ones that tested positive. Per reporting at the time, LA Fitness decontaminated the hot tub and installed bacteria-filtering showerheads.
Source note: facility-level detail rests partly on law-firm case pages summarizing health-department statements and news coverage — the confirmed cases are Documented; treat specific facility details as Reported. The primary DOH records are a pass-2 pull for this site.

Nov–Dec 2025 — 14 cases, “gym exposure” Documented cases / Reported facility
The Florida Department of Health confirmed to a state senator’s office that 14 Legionnaires’ disease cases in Orange County in November 2025 were associated with “gym exposure,” and that the gym’s spa had been closed due to violations found in a regulatory inspection. DOH did not publicly name the gym. WFTV and other local reporting identified the Crunch Fitness in Ocoee (Silver Star Rd); two members told reporters they believed they contracted the disease there.
The gym stated that 40 water samples across its spa systems, showers, heaters, fountains, sinks, and water main came back negative for Legionella, and that it cooperated fully and closed areas as a precaution; DOH’s own account referenced 20 samples collected Nov 21 — an unresolved discrepancy in the public record, flagged here rather than smoothed over. WFTV also noted there was no indication the building’s cooling tower was ever tested. DOH said its epidemiological investigation was ongoing, invoked the confidentiality statute, and stopped responding to the senator’s office. Orange County’s 2025 total reached 100 confirmed and 10 probable Legionnaires’ cases — a 30-year high.
Both things belong in the record: the confirmed case count and exposure link, and the gym’s negative testing. What is not in dispute is that the state’s own health department tied an outbreak to a gym in a town where it had already happened once — in a state where the dry sauna in the same building answers to no sanitation mandate at all.
