Gym Watch: The Nationwide Evidence

Chain-by-chain research on mold, Legionella, and sanitation failures in American gyms and saunas — every claim labeled Documented, Reported, Alleged, or Review-level and linked to its source.

This is the site’s evidence base: a coast-to-coast research sweep of gyms, saunas, steam rooms, and human sweat — complaints, news, lawsuits, health-department records, and the science. Pass 1 was completed October 14, 2026. It is a survey, not an exhaustive records pull; pass 2 (review-mining, primary health-department records, court dockets, and a 50-state code check) is already scoped.

How to read the labels

The strongest cases

  1. Ocoee, Florida — twice. Documented A Legionnaires’ cluster confirmed by the Florida Dept. of Health in Orange County at an LA Fitness in 2017 — and 14 more cases with “gym exposure” at the same address in late 2025, under a different operator.
  2. Gold’s Gym, Daytona Beach — the founding case. Named mold species from a consumer test kit, serious illness, a five-video record, and the complete agency dead-end tour. The case this site is built on.
  3. Gold’s Gym, Tucson (2009). Reported Pima County inspectors documented mold in a Gold’s Gym men’s locker room — because that county actually inspected gyms on complaint.
  4. YMCA, Lawrenceville, Georgia (2017). Documented The Gwinnett County Health Department’s contact over Legionella cases among users closed the pool, hot tubs, sauna, steam room, and showers at the J.M. Tull-Gwinnett Family YMCA. (Georgia Health News)
  5. YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City (2017). Reported Permanently closed the saunas and steam rooms at five clubs, saying the rooms were hard to keep clean and sanitary and citing rising insurance costs. (News9)
  6. LA Fitness mold lawsuit, W.D. Pa. (2019). Alleged A federal complaint alleging concealed pool-area mold. Allegations only.
  7. The communal-sauna MRSA outbreak (17 cases). The science anchor — covered in Sweat, Benches, and the Under-Bench Problem.
  8. Gold’s Gym Daytona Beach — Review Watch. The founding-case gym tracked platform by platform: BBB grade F on four unanswered complaints — including the Aug 2024 sauna-mold complaint — beside a customer-reviews bucket showing 0 published, and a 4.7-star Google average.
  9. Gold’s Gym Ormond Beach — Review Watch. The sister location: BBB grade D-, two more unanswered complaints, a same-day sauna-mold review — and multiple sources now reporting it closed while the official listings still show hours.

The named target: RSG Group

Gym Watch follows the evidence chain by chain — and, for the founding case, all the way to the owner. RSG Group: The Brand Owner Thomas Bowman Told Personally documents who owns Gold’s Gym, the August 8, 2024 written notice, the August 14 public video message to the RSG executives Thomas named, the unanswered BBB complaint, a live count of the days since that CEO message, and the questions the drafted follow-up letter asks. The local Daytona operator is named separately and fairly: RSG owns the brand; Next Level Health, LLC operates the club.

The world comparison

Why is there no inspector for any of this? Because in America there is almost no mandate for one to enforce. The World Regulates This. America Regulates the Water Next to It. documents the contrast law by law: Germany tests gym shower water annually and reports results to a health office; Switzerland caps Legionella in public showers and names fitness studios in the rule; Spain can close a facility; England puts landlords on a 10-working-day clock for mould. The US entries that exist — NYC sauna permits, NYC housing mold law, California’s mold statute, Connecticut’s school inspections — are the exceptions that map the void.

The Silence Index

Response is the other half of every complaint above. The Silence Index counts it. Its founding table is this case’s own record: the gym’s public BBB file (4 complaints, 0 answered) beside all eight parties the founder filed with in August 2024 — the club, its parent company, and six Florida agencies — not one substantive response among them. It is the scoreboard the evidence in this section feeds, and every Report Mold filing grows it.

The honest negative

Absence of evidence in the “none found” rows is a pass-1 search result, not a clean bill of health. Those chains’ records live in reviews, local news, and court dockets that general search under-indexes — and the fastest-growing chains are adding saunas the fastest, so the exposure footprint is growing faster than any inspection regime. Pass 2 is designed to mine exactly those sources.

Research note: every claim on this page is attributed to its source, linked from the detail pages. Lawsuit contents are labeled allegations; member reviews are labeled review-level; nothing here states or implies a legal verdict against any company.

Ocoee, Florida: The Town Where It Happened Twice

In 2017 the Florida Dept. of Health confirmed Legionnaires' cases tied to an LA Fitness in Ocoee. In late 2025 it confirmed 14 more cases with gym exposure at the same address, under a different operator. The best-documented gym sanitation story in America.
